The Wheeler Economic Development Corporation, Inc. was incorporated on March 16, 1998. A non-profit corporation specifically governed then by Section 4B of the Texas Economic Development Act allowing allocation of ½ of 1% local sales tax. In addition to the types of projects authorized by the Type A rules, the Type B monies may be used to pay for quality of life enhancements, such as parks and recreational facilities. Tourism development initiatives may also be funded with Type B funds. Recent legislation also defines projects for cities of less than 20,000 population as expenditures for targeted infrastructure and improvements to promote new or expanded business development.

EDC BOARD

The Wheeler Economic Development Board meets every 2nd Monday of the month at Wheeler City Hall at 7pm.

The Wheeler EDC Board consists of 7 directors, each of whom shall be appointed by the City Council. The City Council shall consider an individual’s experience, accomplishments, and educational background in appointing members to the Board to ensure that the interests and concerns of diverse segments of the community are considered. Each Director shall meet at least one of the following qualifications:
A)   Serve, or have served, as an owner of a private sector business Enterprise;
B)   Serve, or have served, in a position of executive management of a Company; or
C)   Serve, or have served, in a professional capacity; or
D)   Have experience equivalent to any of the above qualifications.
 
The Board may plan and direct its work through a Director of Economic Development, who will be charged with the responsibility of carrying out the Corporation’s program as adopted and planned by the Board. The Director of Economic Development shall be responsible to the Board and shall act as the Board’s chief administrative office and shall assist the Board in carrying out the duties of the Board as set forth.


 
All meetings and deliberations of the Board shall be called, convened, held and conducted, and notice shall be given to the public, in accordance with the Texas Open Meetings Act, Article 6252-17, Tex. Rev. Civ. Stat. Ann., as amended.
